Google Fashions A New Site

Well we have seen Google buy up the competition and purchase great ideas to help bolster their online dominance of everything related to search and online advertising but who would have thought that thet would now launch an online fashion store?

Well it is true and although still in beta (due to launch we believe next week sometime) they have a brand new website called Boutiques.com

Now looking deeper it does not appear to be a shop as such and is designed to showcase and drive traffic to actual fashion websites and blogs.

Here is what Google say about their new project Boutiques.com

Boutiques.com is a personalized shopping experience, brought to you by Google, that lets you find and discover fashion goods through a collection of boutiques curated by taste-makers — celebrities, stylists, designers, and fashion bloggers. Boutiques uses visual technology to help fashionistas discover and shop their look and creates the opportunity for designers to showcase their collections and latest inspirations online.

Boutiques.com is built on technology developed by our team of fashion experts who work with engineers to “teach” our computer systems to understand various patterns, pairings, and genre definitions. When signed into your account, Boutiques.com learns about your style and preferences and in turn, provides you better results and recommendations over time. Ultimately, Boutiques.com will provide shoppers with a much richer and interactive shopping experience and help drive traffic to retailers’ websites.

So what do you think? Are we likely to see this rolling out to more industries?

Looking deeper and with a slightly cynical mind, is this more ‘profiling’ from Google so they can build up even more information on individuals? They will know an individuals fashion tastes, colour tastes and even price preferences.

Interesting though and we will be studying Boutiques.com in much greater detail and updating you all soon

Google Instant Preview

Well we should all be used to seeing changes in the way Google presents search results. Last month we saw the new layout which includes ‘Google Places’ results within the actual organic search results and now we see Google Instant Preview added to the page.

What is Google Instant Preview?

Well it does what it says on the tin. You now have a magnifying glass by the results and if you click on it you will see a preview window of the websites on the results page (see example below)

More importantly what impact will it have on YOU?

Have you been putting off that website re-design? Well NOW is the time to get it done. With searchers now able to view thumbnail previews of a website they will be able to take into account the design of a website as well as the search results before they click on a link.

If your website is old fashioned or badly designed it may now have a major effect on how many visitors you receive, regardless of your position on the page.

Artemis has always advised its clients that SEO is just one element of Internet marketing and we are seeing this proved even more these days. Not only do you need good rankings, you need a ‘local search’ strategy and a well designed website.

Online marketing is about addressing many different factors in order to increase and then maintain a higher number of ‘targeted’ visitors and the optimum visitor to lead ratio (conversions).

If you have a business online or rely on the search engines such as Google to generate traffic then you need to be updating your Internet marketing strategies quickly. If you don’t your competitors surely will be.

Spanish Internet Usage

Here at Artemis we have preached for a long time that Spain’s Internet usage is on the up and although there is some way to go before the Spanish use and interact on websites the same as some other nations, it is growing at a rapid rate.

A recent study by comScore in September 2010 found that Spanish Internet users and now engaging with the highly popular Social Media sites, with a staggering 90.1% of the Spanish population now being reached via social media.

The main driving forces behind this massive increase in Spain are Facebook and Tuenti which have now become a part of the everyday lives of many Spanish (and Spanish speaking) people in Spain. This of course offers great opportunities for marketing companies and of course advertisers.

Artemis Internet Marketing is a leading marketing company offering SEO services in Spain and has done so since 2003. With many Spanish SEO projects already underway. We are now seeing far more movement in the Spanish SEO market so the research appears to be spot on.

The results of the data from comScore show that Internet portals were the most popular website category, reaching a massive 99% of Spain’s 23.5 million web users. In second place were search engine sites like Google and in third place were social media platforms like Facebook. In fact Facebook reaches 49% of the Spanish online population with 14.2 million unique visitors in September (the month the data was collated).

Unusually Microsoft sites achieved some 20.9 million visitors which reaches nearly every Spanish Internet user. Google websites which include YouTube are increasing in popularity having grown by 17% equating to 19.6 million users.

The other expected online players came in next with Yahoo and Wikipedia but the suprise in sixth place was Spanish publishing house Grupo Prisa.

Going further down the rankings you will find that Schibsted is on the up too with a 15% increase year on year. Schibsted includes popular online sites such as Anuntis, Infojobs and 20minutos all of which now achieved some 8.7 million visitors in September of this year.

A social media website to keep an eye on is Tuenti which has hit the radar with a 21% increase in visitors to 8.3 million year on year for September 2010.

Artemis Internet Marketing is constantly studying the online market place so that we can continue to provide effective and successful Internet marketing to clients in Spain and the UK.

Quality Content

When Google write a detailed post about a subject like website content it is always worth paying close attention to what they are trying to tell us.

One of their latest posts is all about quality website content and multiple websites. It is actually quite amusing as they seem to be telling us to avoid building websites like holiday planning, price comparisons or foreign exchange currency trading as there are already a number of these websites out there and in their words “it doesn’t make sense to reinvent the wheel and compete with existing broad topic sites”

To some extent they do have a point. As Spain’s leading SEO services company, here at Artemis we have many new business meetings with clients who sit in front of us and tell us that they have a great idea for a website and want to be at the top of the search engines as soon as possible for terms like ‘airport car hire’, or ‘holiday accommodation’.

Once we have advised them that they will be competing with websites that have been conducting SEO for many years, have old domains and have invested a vast amount of money in their online marketing they tend to re-think their ideas. This is not to say that top positions cannot be achieved by any means, but it is going to require a large investment and a lot of time and effort. However the financial rewards are enormous once you gain top rankings for these types of keywords.

The Google article goes on to talk about the different tactics that some website owners use to gain multiple positions in the search engines with very similar content across a number of different websites. Reading between the lines, it looks as if Google will be focusing their attentions on these types of websites and even removing some of them from the index if they are deemed as too similar in content to other sites. They even go as far as suggesting that they could view these as ‘doorway’ pages.

Much of the Google article is spot on in terms what they tell us in terms of writing content for websites. Try and write totally unique and compelling content and try to focus on a certain subject matter rather than being to broad.

As part of our SEO services we have website content writers that can write specific content that is ideal for the search engines and compelling for the website visitor. We see this as a critical element to good SEO and of course to the visitors looking for information about the subject of the site.

We have been helping clients achieve top search engine rankings for many years now and have seen many tactics used by other so called SEO companies that Google tell us not to use, and of course eventually the websites get penalised and dropped in rankings or even de-indexed.

We see SEO as a long term strategy so that once you gain the top positions you keep them. When you consider SEO you just need to keep in mind some very basic rules;

1) Well written unique content

2) Natural link development

3) Good internal linking structure

4) Utilise the tools available to you like Webmaster Tools and submit XML site maps etc

5) Don’t try and take short cuts to gain top rankings
