The Evolution of Women’s Roles in SEO and Digital Marketing
Selena: There are more women in the industry now! Many of us have worked together for years, creating a strong foundation of experience and support. Seeing each other progress into leadership roles has been really encouraging.
Key Moments That Shaped Our Careers
Selena: There aren’t singular defining moments, but experiences that drive progress. One of my first clients, a female-led interior design agency, was a key milestone. I had the autonomy to develop my own strategy, and four years later, they’re still my client. Watching their business grow alongside my career is incredibly rewarding—it validates my approach and what we do at Artemis.
Support and Growth at Artemis Marketing
Selena: From day one, I’ve had support for professional development, with tailored plans to expand my skills, improve leadership, and gain client experience. I feel valued and encouraged throughout.
Advice for Women Building Long-Term Careers
Selena: Find a company that aligns with your values and offers growth opportunities. A supportive environment where you can take on challenges and voice ideas is key.
Overcoming Challenges: Imposter Syndrome and Confidence
Selena: Like many, I’ve struggled with imposter syndrome—moments where I questioned myself. Over time, I’ve learned to trust my expertise. Surrounding myself with strong mentors and colleagues has helped me gain confidence and grow.
What Inspired Us to Pursue SEO?
Izzy: My passion for digital marketing and websites led me to SEO. I love its constant evolution—it’s like solving a complex, ever-changing puzzle. Each algorithm update and new search trend pushes me to be more strategic and creative in helping brands connect with their audience.
Lois: While working with Google Ads specialists, I collaborated with the SEO team to maximize client success. Many landing pages scored 5/10 or below, sparking my curiosity about what makes a page effective. This led me down a rabbit hole, revealing how much more there was to learn beyond my apprenticeship.
What excites me most is how small, strategic tweaks drive major ranking improvements. There’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’—success comes from careful, data-driven adjustments to achieve meaningful visibility.
Navigating Bias and Challenges as Women in SEO
Izzy: Early in my career, I found my insights overlooked in meetings. I overcame this by delivering data-driven results, building a strong network, and confidently articulating my expertise. Letting my work speak for itself helped me gain respect.
Lois: Being heard as a young woman can be tough, with experienced voices often dominating discussions. However, I believe ideas should be valued on merit, not hierarchy. At Artemis, we emphasise ‘fresh eyes’—a new perspective often catches what others overlook.
To navigate this, I focused on speaking with purpose, especially early on. Contributing only when I had something valuable to add helped me build credibility and gain attention for the right reasons.
Good communication is key, and I believe women excel in emotional intelligence and reading the room. Over time, I’ve refined this skill to navigate discussions effectively and bring thoughtful insights to the table.
Essential Skills for Women Entering SEO & STEM Fields
Izzy: Analytical thinking, adaptability, strong communication, resilience, and technical curiosity are essential.
Lois: I am an advocate for women in STEM and encourage those ladies to push through all glass ceilings. For me, curiosity is key. Maintaining a sense of wanting to know more and thinking there is always something to learn. Never think you know everything.
Advice for Women Considering Careers in Digital Marketing
Izzy: Don’t let imposter syndrome hold you back. Build a strong network, continuously learn, and never apologise for being ambitious.
Lois: Ignore voices that try to hold you back. Surround yourself with uplifting people, take opportunities, and build relationships—they can open unexpected doors.
The Power of Mentorship
Lois: Mentorship has been invaluable in providing guidance, industry insights, and confidence. Learning from others’ experiences has fast-tracked my growth and helped me make smarter decisions.
Inspiring Role Models
Selena: My line manager, Sara, has shown me that success doesn’t require fitting a traditional mould. Her resilience and adaptability inspire me. I’m also inspired by new colleagues like Lois and Izzy, who challenge me to improve.
What International Women’s Day Means to Us
