Long pages vs short pages – What’s better for ranking?

Insights

There was a time, many years ago, when the perceived value of a page was based on how much content the page contained. There used to be an old technique called the “Skyscraper method” which was based on taking the high-ranking page for the keyword….and then building upon it, making a version which is more complete with a lot more content.

But that doesn’t really work today. In those days, search engines were relatively dumb and couldn’t really understand if the content was good or not.

But that’s all changed over recent years as search engines have applied AI to really understand the context and content of web pages; so more isn’t always better now.

How often have you Googled something, ended up on a ridiculously long page when all you wanted was a quick answer or brief insight for your search query? These types of pages aren’t a good user experience and search engines are clever enough now that much of the content on long pages is often pointless and can actually cause the pages to rank much lower.

If there was ever a time to put the user first…it’s now!
